Looking for a ChatGPT Health alternative?

Reviewed

OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT Health is "intended for your own records." When the records are your mom's and the whole family is helping, KeptWell is the free app built for that: one private circle around her, each of you on your own login, and an AI that reads and explains every record anyone adds.

Best ChatGPT Health alternatives in 2026

OpenAI relaunched ChatGPT Health as Health in ChatGPT on July 23, 2026. Here's how it compares with KeptWell for a family, going by OpenAI's own announcement and help center as of October 2026. Other options people look at, including one for clinicians, are below the table.

Why caregivers switch

What changes when it's a parent's records

Getting one lab result explained is easy now. The hard part with a parent is keeping everyone on the same record.

  1. A second account isn't a family plan

For someone else's records, OpenAI's help center suggests a separate account or a separate project. A separate account is one more login, and whoever holds it holds Mom's records. KeptWell starts from the patient instead: one circle, and each sibling signs in as themselves, as an admin or a member. There's no limit on how many join and nothing to pay.

  2. Read when it arrives, not when you remember to ask

Add a discharge summary, a CT report or a photo of the paper from urgent care, and KeptWell reads it right away: what it is, the date, what was found, which medications changed. It goes on the timeline for everyone in the circle. ChatGPT Health explains a lab result when you select it or ask, and may send an update when new records sync. In KeptWell, that work is done before your brother opens the app.

  3. KeptWell can run on OpenAI's models too

KeptWell isn't built on the ChatGPT app. It reads documents and answers questions through AI providers' APIs, OpenAI's among them, depending on the task. So the company behind the model may be the same one. What's different is everything around it: every record filed under one patient, a private chat for each person that has read all of them, and answers that cite the document they came from. We don't opt in to model training.

  4. Fix it once, for everyone

Say a recording misheard the oncologist's name, or a medication was stopped last week. Tell the assistant once and it can be saved for the whole circle, so everyone's answers use it, new documents are read with it and future recordings spell the name right. Or keep it private to you. In ChatGPT, a medication update like that changes your own Health profile.

How KeptWell reads the records

A note from KeptWell

Keep every record in one place your whole family can read

KeptWell takes the scans, lab results, visit notes, and appointment recordings a family collects and turns them into one organized, searchable record. Upload a document and it's read, summarized in plain English, and filed where everyone in the care circle can find it. Ask a question and get an answer grounded in the actual records.

Common questions

What happened to ChatGPT Health?
OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health on January 7, 2026 as a separate space in ChatGPT, open first to a small group through a waitlist. On July 23, 2026 it relaunched as Health in ChatGPT for U.S. users 18 and older: connected health information can now be used in any chat, and the Health tab in the sidebar is where you connect and manage it. Earlier Health chats and files sit in a Health Project under Projects.
Is ChatGPT Health free?
Health in ChatGPT is part of ChatGPT's Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, for logged-in U.S. users 18 and older on the web and iOS. OpenAI doesn't list a separate price for it. KeptWell is free today too, with every feature, for the whole family and with no limit on members.
Is ChatGPT Health HIPAA compliant?
No. OpenAI's help center says Health in ChatGPT "is not intended for clinical or covered-entity use and does not offer a Business Associate Agreement," and points healthcare organizations to ChatGPT for Healthcare and ChatGPT for Clinicians. KeptWell is in the same place: it does not currently offer a Business Associate Agreement or claim HIPAA compliance. It's built for families looking after someone's health.
Can I use ChatGPT Health for my mom's records?
OpenAI's help center says: "The connected Health experience is intended for your own records. If you need to explore someone else's information, use a separate account or a separate project with project-only memory and uploaded files." KeptWell is built for that case. A circle is set up around your mom, and each person helping joins with their own login.
Does KeptWell use ChatGPT?
Not the ChatGPT app. KeptWell reads documents and powers its chat through AI providers' APIs, OpenAI's among them, depending on the task; our security page lists every provider. We don't opt in to model training, the providers don't train on API inputs or outputs by default, and they may keep API content for up to 30 days under standard safety controls.
How hard is it to switch from ChatGPT Health to KeptWell?
There's no importer, and chats don't move. Upload the original files instead: the PDFs and photos you gave ChatGPT (older Health chats and files sit in a Health Project under Projects). Connect MyChart where the health system has turned that on, or Apple Health on the patient's iPhone, and KeptWell reads and sorts each record. Then invite the family.

Start with the record you last pasted into ChatGPT

Upload it (a lab report, a discharge summary, the notes from the last visit) and see it come back in plain English, filed where the whole family can find it. KeptWell is free today.
