Common questions about recording doctor visits

Is it legal to record a doctor appointment?

In most U.S. states, yes, when you are part of the conversation: the majority use one-party consent, which means a participant can record without asking. A minority of states (California, Florida, and others) require everyone present to agree. The respectful move, and the one we recommend everywhere, is to ask first. Most clinicians say yes, and many appreciate that the family wants to get the details right. Check your state's rule before relying on a recording.

Do I need the doctor to talk into the phone?

No. A phone on the desk or in a bag picks up a normal exam-room conversation. The transcription pipeline handles ordinary room audio, and KeptWell identifies who was speaking so the transcript reads like a conversation, not a wall of text.

What happens if the phone locks or a call comes in?

The recording continues with the screen locked. If a phone call interrupts, KeptWell saves what it captured and resumes cleanly, and every finished portion stays playable even if the app crashes mid-visit. Recordings are treated as precious: nothing is deleted until it has safely uploaded or you explicitly discard it.

Can I record on Android or the web?

In-app recording is iPhone-only today (the KeptWell Care app, iOS 17 and later). From Android or a computer you can record with any voice memo app and upload the file to KeptWell on the web; it goes through the same transcription and summary pipeline.

Who can hear the recording and read the transcript?

The members of your care circle, and nobody else. Circles are private and invitation-only. There are no public pages, and recordings are never used to train AI models.

How accurate is the transcript with medical terms?

Good, and it improves as you correct it. Drug names and clinician names are the usual stumbles. When you fix a misheard name in the chat, KeptWell remembers the spelling and applies it to future transcriptions for your circle.
